We live in a world of social media that allows people the opportunity to showcase their businesses, personal lives, and just about anything they feel inspired to share. Many people participate in fun challenges, TikTok dances, and much more. Some even share (overshare) photos of their minute-by-minute and day-by-day activities. I really want to know what you do for a living (SMH)!! No judgment but I know you can use your time more wisely. Not everyone is a social media influencer.
The kicker for me is when I log onto social media and read a timeline of subliminal messages. For those who can read a room and spot chaos, likewise, we can read an unhappy person who is on social media trying to find ways to validate what they are going through or their behaviour. If this is you, I can only believe that you have no real friends to talk to about your issues, so you run to repost and display your dirty laundry. And, if you have real friends who are providing sound advice that you clearly don’t wanna hear, then you are wasting their time.
Nowadays all you need is an internet connection, a compatible device, some mojo, a few followers, a few likes and you are on your way (I am being very sarcastic)! You are on your way to self-healing on a platform with 70% of your followers who do not give a damn about you. However, they love seeing your trainwreck of life falling apart in front of their eyes. Don’t get mad at me for saying something. You are the one reposting and retweeting. We all know Ray Ray ain't no good because you are telling the world.. But have the audacity to get mad when someone says anything to help you. Do you boo!
Some of you are so consumed by social media that you fail to pull away long enough to see the real world. “Real”, to you, is reflected on screens, and some drive themselves crazy trying to replicate the life they see on someone else’s feed. As I will repeat again, many people will not pull away because social media has become their validation and their other God!! You rather go to the internet pastor than the local TRUSTED pastor, the internet influencer giving bad relationship advice and they haven't been in a healthy relationship since 1939, because you need something to make you feel good about the decision(s) you are making or have made. Girl come on!!
Oftentimes, you post, repost, comment, and like content without giving much thought to the consequences, so long as it resonates with you. But did you know that what you post and repost can be the same as transferring spirits? Did you know that there’s power in the tongue just like its power in the post, repost, and or retweet What do you mean, Coach Shonda?
If I post something negative and you repost it for someone else to read, they may come into agreement with that negative post. When we share harmful content, we consent to the spirit that inspired the post in the first place. If the source of the content is malicious, then you’ve come into agreement with a malicious spirit. You’ve agreed with the spirit of the message and passed it along, even if that was not the plan.
We are more exposed to harmful messages and spirits than ever before. By reposting content, we form a part of someone’s marketing team. We can choose to market heaven-approved content or approach social media with our spiritual eyes closed. The latter is a risky position to take. We are told to “guard our hearts” because “out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks.” Some posts, reposts, etc....... are questionable and tell others more than they want to know…
As believers, we must understand our role in the online social networking space. Our online behaviour should positively reflect Christ and align with our godly identity and not just promote what is popular. We become what we repeatedly consume, and if we are repeatedly exposed to evil, then it negatively affects our spirit. We should develop the habit of carefully curating our online space, removing any accounts or products harmful to our mental, emotional, or spiritual health. To be honest, many of you need to clean up your friends list. But who am I to tell you what to do!!
We can and should interact with each other both online and offline. Our aim as Christians is to reach the world for Christ. This requires communication and social interaction but does not imply mindless consumption. Anything that takes us away from God or competes with God for our attention is an idol. The hours that we spend online could be spent in the Word, with our families, working on business goals, education, and much more.
Instead of having a “fear of missing out” on earthly things, we should cultivate a strong desire to experience the things of God. Instead of being trapped by the spirit of comparison, let us celebrate with each other as we walk in our own unique purpose. The online world is entertaining and can be good for business but ask yourself what you are displaying. Are you using it for good or just giving people a view of your spiraling and out-of-control life?
Some of you need to take a much-needed break and refocus your mind. It’s okay to disconnect for 21 days or 30 days to just spend time in a book, your business plan, your kids, with GOD, your family, or whatever provides positivity on this journey called life.
Let me share my secret, I don't have Facebook, IG, Tiktok etc. on my phone. I have a tablet that I use to log in from time to time to social sites. I add the app to my phone if I will be away and need to promote my business from afar. However, when I return to my home, the app (s) are removed from my phone. I ain't missing anything throughout the day, or week on social media. However, this is my method... You figure yourself and social media out. Be sure that you are representing yourself well. Be careful what you read, entertain, or repost.
Commit today to be more mindful of how you use social media, the time you spend, the things you share or agree with, and the spirits you transfer.
